Nexium is the most common generic of esomeprazole magnesium, a powerful acid blocker used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. But Nexium may also be used off-label for other purposes, such as to treat a severe form of acid reflux, which is sometimes referred to as heartburn. The term "heartburn" is used to describe the burning sensation during the day when the heartburn is more intense than usual. The burning sensation is caused by an enzyme called H+ / L-cells that secrete stomach acid. Esomeprazole magnesium, the active ingredient in Nexium, blocks the action of this enzyme, allowing the stomach to empty and allowing the stomach to expand. The increased acidity in the stomach causes frequent heartburn that is caused by the overactive H+ / L-cells in the stomach lining. When this happens, the heartburn can become severe enough to cause an inability to move the heart.

When you take Nexium, your stomach lining may be damaged by acid production and the increased acid production may damage the lining of the esophagus (the tube that carries food out of the stomach). If you take Nexium for a long time, your stomach may not absorb enough acid to make it hard for your esophagus to open and heal. This damage to the lining of the esophagus may not only cause serious damage to the esophagus but also lead to a condition called "acid-reflux disease". You may also experience symptoms of a serious condition called "heartburn" when you take Nexium, such as a burning sensation in the chest and a severe cough and runny nose.

If you take Nexium and have serious side effects from the medication, talk to your doctor about a different medication to treat your GERD and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. These medications may also be used for other conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions about Nexium:

Will Nexium be used for acid reflux?

The use of Nexium for acid reflux can be used for a number of different purposes, including to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Nexium is also used to treat GERD. In some instances, Nexium may be used off-label for other conditions, such as heartburn.
